What Is AT?
Assistive Technology (AT) is a term used to describe devices, technology, and aids that allow a person to be more independent. This can include small devices that help people with arthritis hold utensils, or large computer screens that allow persons with low vision to access information from the Internet. Other examples of Assistive Technology include specially adapted toys for children; voice activated computer programs; and most types of mobility and communication devices.
In many cases, Assistive Technology helps those with disabilities perform the daily activities most others take for granted. Getting out of bed and going to work or school are activities that may require the aid Assistive Technology. Once at work or school, using a computer, reading, or communicating with peers are tasks that may also require the use of Assistive Technology. Assistive Technology can play a vital role in ensuring that people with disabilities achieve their best and participate fully in the community.
